Effects of Body Type and Voice Pitch on Perceived Audio-Visual Correspondence and Believability of Virtual Characters
Published in ACM Symposium on Applied Perception 2023, 2023
This paper examines how virtual characters’ body type and voice pitch influence perceived audio-visual correspondence and believability. The study used a within-group design with 72 participants and tested combinations of body type and voice pitch for female and male virtual characters.
The findings show that voice pitch and the interaction between body type and voice pitch affected perceived audio-visual correspondence and believability. The study also found that perceived believability was strongly related to perceived audio-visual correspondence, suggesting that appropriate voice-body matching can improve how believable virtual characters appear.
