Affective Arm and Hand Gestures in Animated Pedagogical Agents
Published in ProQuest Dissertations and Theses, 2023
This thesis investigates how affective arm and hand gestures can make animated pedagogical agents more emotionally expressive. The study applied gestures inspired by the Geneva Multimodal Emotion Portrayals (GEMEP) database to lecturing animations of animated pedagogical agents.
An online perception study with 131 participants examined how viewers recognized six basic emotions: anger, joy, sadness, disgust, fear, and surprise. The results showed that emotion recognition was generally low, although participants were more accurate when identifying broader affective dimensions such as arousal and valence. The thesis discusses possible reasons for the low recognition rates and reflects on how gesture design can influence emotional perception in animated pedagogical agents.
